A Blog A Day

It\’s a blog where I write about the extraordinary and the ordinary things going on in my life.

Good Advice

My friend told me that she was afraid that she would lose her fiance. She said that she was so afraid that they won’t end up together. One time, she actually got drunk.

I advised her that there’s no way for us to know the future. She may or may not lose her fiance. But what’s important is that she has him now. And it’s what she has NOW that matters.

” There really is no perfect relationship, but I wish there was such a thing, ” she said.

” There’s a reason why nothing is perfect. If things were perfect there would be no room for growth or for improvement. Things are imperfect for a reason,” I replied.

” That’s a really good advice,” she said.

” I know. Because that is the truth. But the thing is, I’m only good at handing out advice, but when it comes to myself, I don’t know what to do half of the time.”

I’ve noticed that when it comes to other people, I can give them advice more readily. But when it comes to myself, I don’t even know what to do. I realize why that is.

Most of the time, we get too emotionally invested in our own problems. Our judgment is clouded by our emotions that we can’t see the solution. That’s why other people are best able to give you advice because they are not emotionally involved. They know exactly what to do because they are not overwhelmed by the situation.

And I realize that I could apply that to my own life. Most of the time, we know what to do. It’s just that we refuse to see what’s right in front of us. And the only way that you can ever see things clearly for yourself is when you shift your perspective. And try to see yourself in a third person point of view.  To detach yourself from your situation.

And I realize that that’s the secret to everything in life. We have to detach ourselves from our everyday life. And by detachment I mean, mindfulness or awareness. When we are aware that we suffer, we have a choice whether to continue on suffering. But when we are unconscious or unaware that we are suffering, that’s when we feel that we have no choice.

I really do believe in the power of choice. We can choose to be above it all or we can choose to remain as we are– unaware, ignorant and suffering.
